Wasgamuwa National Park is a natural park in Sri Lanka situated in the Matale and Polonnaruwa Districts. It was established in 1984 to protect and provide a refuge for displaced wild animals during the Mahaweli Development Project and is one of the four National Parks designated under this Project. Originally designated as a nature reserve in 1938, Wasgamuwa became a strict nature reserve in the early 1970s. It is renowned for large herds of Sri Lankan Elephants, and you can also see Leopards, Bears, Deer, Crocodiles, and various kinds of Birds. The park is one of the Important Bird Areas in Sri Lanka. The name “Wasgamuwa” is derived from “Walas Gamuwa,” with “Walasa” meaning sloth bear in Sinhala and “Gamuwa” meaning wood. The park is situated 225 km from Colombo.
